| Komen Phoenix Grant Recipient Uses Funds to Raise Awareness Among Navajos |
In Arizona's Navajo communities, a lack of breast cancer resources coupled with cultural taboos make raising awareness about the disease challenging.
The Arizona Myeloma Network (AzMN), a second-year recipient of a Komen education grant, is addressing these issues through its Women Helping Women: The Diné Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program. Through the program, more than 25 specially-trained Navajo women have provided cancer education and outreach services to more than 650 other women in the Fort Defiance area of northern Arizona. Through one-on-one meetings and public events, the volunteers are not only helping to educate their neighbors, they are also helping to connect them with local medical resources. For a culture who believes that discussing such topics is a bad omen, the increased communication is huge step in the right direction.
Last week, Fry's Food Stores honored the AzMN's work in the Navajo community with a stipend and a "Giving Hope a Hand Award." This is just another example of how our community partners are working together to help create a world without breast cancer!

| Start Training Now for 5th Annual Tri for the Cure! |
For Tri-Scottsdale co-founders Preston Miller and Lewis Elliot, the annual Tri for the Cure event is a way to introduce women to a sport they love, while also raising money for a cause that hits close to home – Lewis lost his mother to breast cancer in 2003. This year, the duo, joined by event chair Christina Catalano, hopes to make an even greater impact through the 5th annual Tri for the Cure on Sunday, March 20.
Designed to attract novice triathletes, the annual event has raised more than $150,000 for Komen Phoenix since 2007. Part of the appeal is that Tri Scottsdale offers free training and educational sessions for participants, making it easy for beginners to ease into their first triathlon, which includes swimming, biking and running (there is also a run-bike-run duathlon option). Upcoming clinics include a triathlon/duathlon clinic on 1/31 and a swim clinic on 2/13.

| Local Teenager Creates Artwork to Raise Money for Komen Phoenix |
If you made a New Year's resolution to do something nice for others in 2011, look no further than Brenley Markowitz for inspiration. When the 13-year-old Valley girl celebrated her Bat Mitzvah last year, she decided that she wanted her Mitzvah Project to benefit Komen Phoenix. The talented young artist created a series of four images featuring the words Live, Love, Hope and Peace and had them turned into notecards and posters. Because local printer BrickPrint donated their initial printing services, Brenley was able to sell the finished products at a school art fair and at her Bat Mitzvah, raising close to $1,500 for Komen Phoenix! If you would like to purchase any of Brenley's breast cancer-inspired pieces, please email expressionsofhope@gmail.com.
